Sponsor Responsibly

Anheuser Busch communicates "displeasure" with UFC:

Last year Anheuser-Busch InBev, maker of Bud Light, renewed its sponsorship deal with the UFC in a multi-year pact, which requires the UFC to display the Bud Light logo in the UFC’s Octagon Ring, at press conferences, weigh-ins, and in locker rooms.

The UFC has tolerated jokes about rape, homophobic slurs and sexually explicit remarks that are demeaning towards women.  UFC fighters have made the following public statements:
  • UFC fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson urges Asian fans who don’t appear to speak English repeat the following homophobic statements after him: “I’m a fag,” “I have big tits,” and “I am big faggot.”
  • Rashad Evans said to opponent Phil Davis during a news conference to promote their January 2011 fight, “Cause I’m gonna put those hands on you worse than that dude did them other kids at Penn State.”

On April 25, 2012, AdAge reported that Anheuser-Busch made the following statement:

We’ve communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks
made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this. If
the incidents continue, we will act.  [We] embrac[e] diversity and [do] not
condone insensitive and derogatory comments rooted in ethnicity, race,
religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability, etc.

Two months after Anheuser-Busch communicated its displeasure to the UFC with UFC fighters’ remarks on June 25, 2012, UFC fighters Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva took part in a media press conference call to promote UFC 148, one of the most anticipated fights of the year in which the two would face-off.  Before the end of the call, Chael Sonnen, in reference to comments made last fall, stated “I’ve got two words for Anderson Silva: medium rare.”  This statement referenced an earlier threat Sonnen made to Anderson.  After his win at UFC 136 last October, Sonnen directed a comment to defending UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and his wife.  He said, “You tell Anderson Silva I’m coming over and kicking down his back door and patting his little lady on the (butt), and I’m telling her to make me a steak, medium-rare, just how I like it.”

The UFC does not enforce a policy of respect and concern for others.  How many more incidents like these need to happen for Anheuser-Busch to act?  When will enough be enough?

  1. This entire website is a campaign to unionize casinos owned by the Fertitta brothers who also happen to own the UFC. This is a lame attempt at propaganda. I bet this comment gets erased. Will screen cap it and add it to my growing collection of your ridiculous campaign. Counter website coming soon.
